About us
Lir Studio - Irish Botanical Seaweed handcrafted artworks.
Lir studio produces sustainable Irish handcrafted decorative arts created from seaweed botanicals which have been cast adrift onto our wild Irish coastlines. These natural materials offer an exquisite palette of textures, tones and vibrant colours, which we capture using traditional methods of drying and hand pressing. These traditional processes allow us to produce our delicate and original artworks, prints and stationery.
The studio was launched in Belfast by Dublin native Sandra D'Arcy in 2020. "I moved from Dublin to Belfast four years ago. It was an easy transition, as Belfast's natural landscape of sea and mountains mirrored that of Dublin. Living and working in Belfast has allowed me to combine my love of nature and of art. Combing the beaches along the Eastern seaboard after a bracing storm or high tide allows me to forage these natural sustainable materials which enable me to create our elegant and original artworks."
Our Lir Studio name is inspired by the the Irish myth of Manannán Mac Lir (pronounced 'man-an-on mack leer') the mighty Sea-God of Ancient Ireland and he is regarded as the Overlord of the mighty Tuatha de Danann. Our print collections have been inspired by Irish myths and legends.

Sustainability
The seas surrounding Ireland are home to some of the world's most colourful underwater gardens. Storms and tides naturally harvest seaweeds from these sea forests - washing ashore their catches. It is from these wild Irish coastlines that we hand forage our beached seaweeds. This ensures sustainability and minimises human intervention.
We present our original commissioned artworks on ivory Forest Stewardship Council 320gsm watercolour textured paper. Our fine art prints are presented on Hahnemühle 290gsm 60% hemp and 40% white cotton paper. We use water-based glues to ensure stability for framing. Preserving traditional handcrafting methods and combining natural materials is at the heart of what Lir Studio creates.
Foraged
We have combined our love of nature, sustainability and creating art into producing our handcrafted Irish original artworks.
Our native seaweed is hand foraged on the outgoing tides of the Irish Sea along the eastern coastlines of Ireland.
It is wonderful to forage along these wild coastlines after a storm to gather seaweed. From these seaweeds we create our decorative arts. Our products reflect the delicate balance of nature while preserving a traditional practice. As a result of these processes, each piece produced is a unique work of art.
Handpressed
Inspired by these beautiful and natural materials which offer us a glorious palette of natural colours, textures and tones - we practise a traditional method of naturally drying and hand pressing our Irish seaweeds to create elegant, and delicate original pieces of art.
Each commissioned artwork we create is original, reflecting the uniqueness of each piece of seaweed we choose to work with.
We simply handcraft from what nature has given to us to produce our sustainable and uniquely Irish artworks.
